"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls" - Pablo Picasso

Matthew Thomas

Photographer / film maker / artist.

My own creative ‘journey’ has taken me from painting and printmaking to computer programming, CGI, Graphic Design and Film Making. Furthermore, I am an innovative creative, critical, visual thinker.

Byam-Shaw school of art, London.

London College Of Printing

Liverpool University

Starting as a painter and print maker, I am now also a typesetter, typographer, graphic designer and film maker. I therefore, use all these skills in my work. They are combinations of analogue and digital imaging technologies, and therefore produce multiple layers of meaning.

My projects often consist of multiple works, grouped around specific themes. As a result, my work has a visceral meaning that belies its visual surface and process. For me, the process is as important as the finished work.

Research and production often lead to new areas of interest arising, which as a result inspires the next body of work. As a result I do not use the same methods for each project. This brings fresh impetuous to truly explore all the possibilities within an idea.

Fine Art

Above all, I had a one man show at the Williamson Art Gallery in 2012.

In addition, many works have been published in multiple media outlets. This is as a culmination of working with The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and to Heavy Metal bands and arts production companies such as The Brouhaha.

The Fibonacci-based project, ‘Kaloseidos’, has been exhibited widely, all over particularly the North west of England (and London) to critical acclaim. Link here.

Furthermore, I have undertaken a range of commissions including Lenticular artwork for Culture Liverpool.

In addition, my first group exhibition was at the Royal Academy at the age of 10.

Finally, I shoot portrait photos for PR companies, bands, actors, theatre productions and film stills. My latest work was a series of films on environmental awareness for Wirral council.

"Matthew's work for the Ellesmere Port Bicentenary exhibition programme was delivered with a very high degree of attention to detail, well researched, with a very effective result that pleased all the stakeholders from the local authority and private sector supporters, from the wider community and specialist interest groups such as local history and canal heritage societies. I'd happily work with him again."
Nick Birkinshaw

"Matthew Thomas does exactly what it says on the can; he is a very skilled photographer and an extremely talented artist. I have, in the past, worked with professionals who claim to have both these talents, but have unfortunately proved to have only one and not the other."
